BSF deserter held

NEW DELHI: A Border Security Force deserter who had jumped parole as a life convict has been arrested by the Delhi police. With the arrest of Manoj Shukla, the police claim to have worked out a February 2006 blind murder case of a driver, Suresh Kumar.

The police said the body of Surest was found with its head crushed with a heavy stone in the Kotla Mubarakpur area on February 12. The deceased, a resident of Baghpat, used to work as a driver in South Extension Part-I.

During investigation it was revealed that the deceased had consumed liquor on the night of his murder with his friends Manoj Shukla, Shyam Sunder and Jairam Pandey, all of whom were directed to join the investigation. But while the other two responded, Manoj Shukla absconded. He was nabbed from Noida.

The police said Manoj Shukla disclosed that he had joined the BSF in 1995 as a constable. While posted at Kupwara in J & K, he nurtured some grudge against two of his colleagues, Ashok and Suresh, and on the night of December 21, 1999 he shot both with his self-loading service rifle and tried to abscond. However, he was caught and a trial in BSF court was conducted from where he was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2000. After three years of imprisonment, Manoj managed to get a one-month parole on medical grounds. He jumped the parole and came to Delhi.

As for the murder of Suresh, the police said that on the day of the incident Manoj had a quarrel with the deceased in which the latter slapped him. Thereafter, the accused waited for Suresh to sleep and avenge the insult and then allegedly murdered him with a heavy stone.
