BANGALORE: Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy has decided to order an inspection of engineering colleges, following report of lack of infrastructure such as laboratories, libraries, teachers and furniture in some of them. Mr. Shankaramurthy told presspersons that out of 127 engineering colleges a few did not have infrastructure and some of them might even lose their affiliation, if somebody complained about it. But the Minister said he wanted to be positive on the issue and his intention of inspections through his departmental officials was to improve the quality of infrastructure. There was a possibility of involving the All India Council of Technical Education, if necessary. The Minister said he would ask the Visvesvaraya Technological University to conduct inspection of such colleges. He agreed with the suggestion that the VTU Act needed amendment to fix the age of retirement of the Vice-Chancellor on a par with other universities. He said that some seats in the dental colleges were falling vacant after the COMED-K completed its test and the same would be filled through the CET after transferring the seats to the general category. Mr. Shankaramurthy said most of the seats in the engineering colleges particularly the computer science and information science disciplines would be filled. He would request the Finance Department for sanctioning Rs. 56 crore for completing the construction or repair of degree college buildings in the State. Already, Rs. 85 crore had been spent. He was expecting the proposal from the Commissioner of Collegiate Education next week.
