This Day That Age
During the current financial year the Government would introduce 20 additional trains on the broad gauge and 20 more on the metre gauge, said the Railway Minister, Mr. Lal Bahadur Shastri, inaugurating the fifth meeting of the National Railway Users Consultative Council in New Delhi on July 20. Apart from this, about 200 trains would have more coaches. The Minister said that to cope with overcrowding on the railways, it was proposed to provide additional transportation capacity of 23 per cent on the metre gauge and 10 per cent on broad gauge during the Second Plan period. Mr. Shastri said that much more had to be spent on certain items of development programme of the railways as against the present allotment "if we really want to cope with the increases both in passenger as well as goods traffic." He referred to the suggestion of Prof. Galbraith, the American economist, that active steps should be taken to discourage travel on the Indian Railway and said "while this is a desirable objective, it must not be forgotten that there is very little luxury travel on our railways. Travel in connection with various melas, marriages, etc, could certainly be reduced considerably and it is here that this council can help in creating the right atmosphere through propaganda.''
