Thai poll set for Oct. 15

P. S. Suryanarayana

SINGAPORE: King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand has signed a decree for a general election to put the country, hit by a prolonged political crisis, back on course. Endorsing the Government's proposal, the constitutional monarch set October 15 as the poll date. And he took the unprecedented step of annotating the decree with a note that spelt out his desire to see the country hold a fair and free election as a prelude to the restoration of political normality. Regional diplomats and political observers said the legal cases against the ruling party and the main Opposition outfit, involving allegations of fraud during the April 2 snap general election, could still have an impact on the electoral process now being set in motion.
