Musharraf's appeal

Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf's appeal to India to stop the blame game, offer of help in tracking down the perpetrators of the Mumbai blasts if proof is provided of the involvement of Pakistan-based terrorists, and his statement that any setback to peace talks will strengthen the hand of terrorists are prima facie convincing. One wonders what proof the General is talking about. Our governments have given enough evidence of places where terrorist training camps exist in Pakistan and PoK. Unless he dismantles the camps, no amount of rhetoric will help in curbing cross-border terrorism.

The President's offer of cooperation shows he fears the worst. Surely, the Indian intelligence agencies must have had enough proof before going on record. General Musharraf perhaps wants to gain the confidence of his own people and the international community.

By allowing the LeT and the JeM to function under different names while offering sympathy and support to the victims of the Mumbai blasts, President Musharraf has shown yet again that he is adept at running with the hare and hunting with the hounds. If he really wants to help, he can start by extraditing the people on the list of proclaimed offenders that India handed over to Pakistan several years ago.

This is not the first time the General is playing the good boy. Whatever evidence India has provided on Dawood Ibrahim, main accused in the Mumbai blasts of 1993, has been trashed. The President is merely trying to extricate himself from a difficult situation.

The authorities have confirmed the Pakistan connection in the Mumbai blasts. Their disclosures must be on the basis of proof available to them. Now that the Pakistan President has openly challenged India, it should be possible to provide him with indisputable proof. This is the time to expose Pakistan and its argument that the Kashmir insurgency is the result of a local uprising.
