14,000 people attend chikungunya camps
Staff Reporter
Bangalore:
Nearly 14,000 people attended chikungunya camps conducted by the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) here on Friday.
As many as 2,631 people received treatments for joint pains and high fever (symptoms of chikungunya) and 58 blood samples were sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) to be tested for the disease.
The camps were held throughout the city at maternity homes, dispensaries and some BMP ward offices.
Asking the public not to panic, Bangalore Mahanagara Palike Commissioner K. Jairaj said that the civic body had ordered for 70 additional fogging machines at a cost of Rs. 21 lakh to combat the disease.
The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike said that it had found only two confirmed cases of chikungunya in its hospitals.
The claim comes despite the fact that over 500 cases of chikungunya have been reported in the city.
"We have sent 3,140 samples to the institute of virology and are continuing to send samples.
They have sent back a report stating that only two cases have been confirmed," Chief Health Officer Vijaylakshmi said.
