KARAIKAL: The CEDA (Centre for Environment and Development Alternatives) Trust, a non-governmental organisation, carrying out tsunami rehabilitation works in Karaikal district in the Union Territory of Pondicherry, has encouraged farmers to adopt organic farming methods. The Trust recently, at the advisory meeting for the farmers of its adopted villages in the coastal hamlet of T.R. Pattinam in the district, encouraged the farmers to adopt organic farming to restore the fertility of their lands that were reclaimed after the tsunami in these areas. Nisha, coordinator of CEDA Trust, Karaikal, said that Cordaid and Plan International extended financial assistance for the CEDA project for the reclamation of tsunami-hit lands in the Karaikal region. In all, 252 acres of land were reclaimed with the financial assistance of Cordaid and 257 acres by Plan International benefiting 342 families in the region. K. Nammazhwar, an expert in organic farming, explained the advantages of organic farming methods including protecting the land from the use of chemical fertilizers. S. Ananda Kumar, Assistant Professor of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru College of Agriculture and Research, Karaikal, explained the importance of adopting organic farming methods. A farmers' forum was also organised as part of the meeting that was attended by 60 members. More than 500 farmers participated in the meeting. M.
