Demand for fresh probe into Kiliroor sex scandal

Staff Reporter

Plea to ascertain paternity of the baby of the victim

THRISSUR: Noted human rights activists Sarah Joseph and P. Gita and leader of the People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) P.A. Pouran have demanded a fresh probe by a new set of officials of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the Kiliroor sex scandal.

Addressing a joint press conference here on Friday, they said the State Government should urge the Union Government to depute a new CBI team to probe the case as the previous team had only reproduced the versions of the ineffective inquiry conducted by the State police.

Pointing out that many of the witnesses and complainants in the different sex scandals were facing unnatural death under suspicious circumstances in the State, they said the Government should take steps to ensure the protection of Lata Nair who is the only living individual capable of providing vital clues in the Kiliroor case. They said the Government must also give protection to the life of the baby of the victim in the case, Shari, who also died under mysterious circumstances during the course of investigation into the scandal.

Replying to questions, they said the Departments of Home and Health were the two major agencies which should be able to unravel several intriguing aspects of the case. So the Ministers in charge of the departments should openly come out about the steps being taken to expedite the probe into the case. They said the statement in the medical report that "Praveen is not excluded from possible paternity of Shari's baby" was an insult to the medical sciences.
