NEW DELHI: The Press Council of India on Friday censured three newspapers Times of India (Delhi and Pune), Punjab Kesri (Delhi) and Mid Day (Mumbai) for violation of norms of journalistic conduct. In the case of Times of India, the Press Council found it also violating the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986. The Pune edition of the daily drew the ire of several women organisations for trivialising the problem of harassment of women at the workplace. Also, it "denied complainants their right of rejoinder." The Delhi edition of the paper was pulled up for carrying vulgar and obscene pictures in its supplement, Delhi Times. Two complaints were brought up against Punjab Kesri by the DAV College Trust and Managing Society for publishing a series of "baseless, misleading, fabricated and defamatory news items for the last two years." The Council felt the newspaper had "violated the norms of journalistic ethics regarding pre-publication verification and defamatory writings and the most basic journalistic ethics of not using the columns of newspapers to settle personal scores''.
