Special Correspondent

Issue to be discussed again at a meeting on July 27

  • Rs. 3.41 crore sanctioned to the civic body for the purpose
  • Commissioner says the matter was included in the agenda without her knowledge
  • Councillors say sanitation drive brooks no delay

Srikakulam : After heated discussions over the issue of deciding the agency for the execution of works under the AP Urban Services Programme (APUSP), at the council meeting on Friday, a decision was postponed. The issue would be discussed at another meeting on July 27.

Rs. 3.41 crore has been sanctioned to the municipality under the APUSP. But since engineering department staff are engaged in the execution of other works , it was proposed to hand over these works to the Public Health Department. Owing to divergent views on this issue a decision was postponed. Municipal chairperson M.V. Padmavathi presided over the meeting.

    Memo missing

Commissioner A.V. Ramani, who arrived late, said the subject was included in the agenda without her knowledge and a charge memo was issued to the official concerned for this lapse, but the chairperson said she had instructed officials to include it in the agenda.

Earlier, councillors from both ruling and opposition parties expressed unhappiness over the absence of senior officers, including the Commissioner, , Municipal Engineer, Town Planning Officer and the Municipal Health Officer.

    Further delays

Opposition leader and former chairman A. Varaha Narasimham wanted the meeting postponed as there were none to respond to the queries to be raised.

However, Ms. Padmavathi said such postponements would further delay the execution of development works.

She wanted to take up issues not requiring the Commissioner's presence.

Councillors like Andhavarapu Suribabu, S.Krishna, Dharmana Raghunadha Rao, Rafi and B. Chandravathi voiced concern over poor sanitation and demanded immediate action.
