Mani: Government abetting violence

Staff Reporter

KOTTAYAM: Kerala Congress (M) leader K.M. Mani has accused the State Government of abetting violence and breach of law by students belonging to the Left organisations. He was inaugurating a dharna by party MLAs and State leaders at the Collectorate here on Friday. The dharna was being held in protest against the Government stance against the managements of self-financing professional institutions, Mr. Mani said.

He added that by doing so, the Government had forfeited its Constitutional obligation and the move would have serious repercussions.

Mr. Mani demanded that the State Government take immediate action to restore peace in the higher education sector. The Kerala Congress leader called upon Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan not to put higher education sector at the mercy of the Left student organisations.

He took exception to the stance taken by the student organisation and pointed out that the police inaction during the violence perpetrated by the students' agitation shows the covert support extended by the Government.

KC(M) chairman C.F. Thomas asked the Government to solve the issue through dialogues.

Kerala Congressmen earlier took out a march from the party headquarters to the Collectorate. Party MLAs, State committee office-bearers and other participated in the dharna.
