POOR HYGIENE: A vendor selling fish on the banks of Tammileru at Ameenapet in Eluru with pigs rummaging through heaps of garbage in the background.
ELURU : The murky scene at an unauthorised fish market at Ameenapet on the banks of Tammileru in the city is a classic case for the Eluru Municipal Corporation's (EMC) lack of concern for public health. The stretch from Ameenapet to Katta Subbarao Tota witnesses hectic activity every Sunday with vendors busy selling fish on either side of the road and scores of buyers engaging themselves in a `pick and chose'. However, neither the vendors nor the consumers, bother about the stink, garbage. The place housing the market serves as a dump yard in the remaining days with self-help groups collecting garbage from households and dumping it there. Hence, it seemingly becomes a favourite dwelling place for pigs as well.
Salmonella bacterium
According to the municipal Health Officer Hemalatha, the sale of fish in the unauthorised market was suspended for four weeks due to `intensive' raids by the municipal authorities. However, it was back to square one after reported political interference in favour of the vendors. The situation relating to hygiene is similar in all the unauthorised sale points that keep mushrooming in the city. To quote a medical practitioner, the fish lovers are in for the danger of getting afflicted with typhoid and gastro-enteritis because of salmonella, a bacterium, found in fish in view of the unhygienic conditions.
