Supreme Court panel for State on July 29

HYDERABAD: The empowered committee of the Supreme Court on Polavaram project and Kolleru lake is visiting the State for three days from July 29 to elicit views from public.

An Irrigation Department official said the committee was likely to visit Bhadrachalam area to interact with tribal families being displaced by Polavaram project and the Kolleru area to ascertain whether the lake area was cleared of the encroachments up the contour specified by the Apex Court. - Special Correspondent

Set up complaint panels, says AIDWA

HYDERABAD: The State committee of the All-India Democratic Women's Association has sought setting up of `complaint committees' in Government and private organisations where women are employed.

T. Jyoti, president, and K. Swarooparani, secretary, in a statement issued here on Friday welcomed the suspension of K. Mangapathi Rao, Commissioner, Employment and Training, for his alleged `indecent behaviour' with a woman employee. - Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The State Election Commissioner has said that the first meeting of all Zilla Parishads for the purpose of commencement of term of office of members, Vice-Chairpersons and Chairpersons will be held on July 23. - Staff Reporter

12 employers convicted of ESI Act violation

HYDERABAD: Twelve employers in different parts of the State have been convicted and fined for non-compliance of provision of ESI Act during the last three months.

The conviction, pronounced by the Judicial First Class Magistrate to try offences under the Act, varies from fine of amounts ranging from Rs. 1,000 to Rs. 54,000 and simple imprisonment of 15 days to one month. Six of the employers belong to Hyderabad and Jeedimetla. - Special Correspondent

HRF asks police to produce Maoist leader

HYDERABAD: Human Rights Forum (HRF) State secretary K. Balagopal has asked the police to immediately produce P. Lingamma alias Kranti, squad commander of CPI (Maoist) who was allegedly arrested from the encounter spot at Vadla Ramapuram village in Atmakur mandal of Kurnool district on July 15.

Two workers die in accident at power plant

KURNOOL: Two workers of biomass power plant died in an accident at Pandipadu on the outskirts of Kurnool city on Thursday night.

According to reports, a worker accidentally fell into a bunker at Rayalaseema Green Energy plant. Two others who got into the bunker to rescue the worker got exposed to the toxic carbon monoxide fumes and collapsed. They died on the way to hospital. - Staff Reporter

Telugu Desam Party candidate `kidnapped'

ADILABAD: Banoth Ramchander, a TDP worker and candidate for Beernandi gram panchayat in Khanapur mandal, was allegedly kidnapped by Ravula Chandrahas of the same village, on Thursday night. Ramchander's wife Kavita lodged a complaint with the police accusing Chandrahas of kidnapping the contestant. - Staff Reporter

Rain in coastal Andhra, north Telangana

HYDERABAD: A trough of low pressure was present over the State on Friday. Under its influence, there was widespread rain in coastal Andhra and north Telangana.

During the 24-hour period ended Friday morning, Tuni recorded a rainfall of 4 cm and Dummagudem, Kaleswaram, Manthani 3 cm each. According to a forecast issued by the State Met Office, moderate rain is likely over Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Vizag, East and West Godavari and other Telangana districts. - Special Correspondent

Governor to open Vedic varsity office

TIRUPATI: Governor Rameshwar Thakur will open the administrative block of Sri Venkateswara Vedic University at Purandaradasa complex on Prakasam road here on Saturday. He will later be felicitated at Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha. Mr. Thakur ill then leave for Tirumala by road for darshan of Lord Venkateswara. — Staff Reporter

Lathicharge condemned

KADAPA: CITU members burnt an effigy at the old bus stand here on Friday condemning the lathicharge on electricity workers at Hyderabad.

Electricity workers staging a peaceful demonstration, demanding junior linemen posts to be filled with eligible contract power workers were caned, CITU district president D. Shyam said. He charged the Government with ignoring workers' interestsand toeing the World Bank line. CITU district vice-president B. Narayana also took part.-Staff Reporter

Stage dharna

KADAPA: AISF members staged a dharna near APSRTC Kadapa depot manager's office on Friday demanding a bus stop at Chinnamachupalle in Chennur mandal.

AISF district secretary N. Narasimhulu said, students of the area were put to trouble because the buses did not stop at Chinnamachupalle. RTC officials assured to run some buses from Chinnamachupalle to Kadapa. AISF state council member P. Mahathi, town president K. Munaiah, vice-president Sivasankar took part.-Staff Reporter

Chikungunya rampant

KADAPA: Incidence of chikungunya can be prevented by timely use of homeopathic medicines, Proddatur Municipal Chairperson E. Malleswari said on Friday after inaugurating a free homeopathic medical camp at Venkatasubbamma Girls High School at Proddatur.

Chikungunya was rampant in several places in the district and officials were taking steps to check the mosquito menace, she said. She gave away free medicine to about 300 patients. -Staff Reporter

Christians hail TTD archaka's stand

HYDERABAD: All-India Christian Council hailed the statement of A.V.Ramana Deekshitulu chief archaka of the TTD, that there were no conversions on Tirumala hills and said that it vindicated the organisation's stand.

In a statement here on Friday, G.Samuel, president of the council's A.P. unit and Sam Paul, secretary, asserted that there were no "fraudulent" conversions anywhere in the State, as claimed by the "sangh parivar". - Special Correspondent
