A scene from the play Samrat
NEW DELHI: A three-day theatre festival organised jointly by Aayam, a theatre company, the National School of Drama and the Khadi Village Industries Commission opens at Shri Ram Centre Auditorium this coming Monday. The festival of plays by eminent director Bhanu Bharti will begin with "Samrat" on the first day. Focusing on King Ashok, the play will highlight the great emperor's conversion to Buddhism and also his return to the simple ways of life. The play has been written by K.Jaya Kumar, the celebrated contemporary poet of Kerala. Based on the life of Mahatma Gandhi, "Baapu" will be staged on the second day. This solo play on the trials and tribulations of the great man's life has been written by noted Gandhian poet and playwright Nand Kishore Acharya. An original Hindi play written by Bhanu Bharti, "Naachni", will be staged on the last day. This one-woman show is based on the life of a folk dancer whose life undergoes a change after the country becomes independent. The introduction of new technology also brings drastic changes in the field of performing arts of which she is a part.
