Staff Correspondent
Bidar: The District School Development and Management Committee's Agitation Committee has condemned the decision of the zilla panchayat to divest SDMCs of powers to manage schools. "Formation of school development and management committees was a step to ensure decentralisation in managing schools. It has been proved that parents and local leaders manage schools better than government officials. However, Bidar Zilla Panchayat members failed to understand the significance of the school development and management committee system. They are against empowering school development and management committees. They have withdrawn the powers of school development and management committees to repair school buildings or construct classrooms. Some members have succeeded in stopping funds to school development and management committees and have diverted it to the zilla panchayat," committee president Shantkumar Sherikar and secretary Kanteppa Gumme said in a letter to Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy. It is strange that zilla panchayat members are interested in construction of school buildings and supplying materials to schools, they said. They have not spoken about the quality of teaching or mid-day meals in the schools," they said. They have threatened to go on a fast in front of the zilla panchayat office here on Wednesday.
