NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court has directed the Railway Ministry and the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) to provide addresses of private contractors running pantry cars as well as of kitchens where food is cooked for train passengers to a four-member committee appointed by it. A Division Bench of the court comprising Justice M.K. Sharma and Justice Hima Kohli directed the committee comprising Varun Goswami and Shadman Ali, petitioners in the matter, and A.S. Chandhiok and Kirti Uppal, president and secretary respectively of the Delhi High Court Bar Association, to visit the kitchens and file a status report within four weeks. The directions came on a public interest litigation by the two petitioners accusing IRCTC of supplying unhygienic food to passengers in trains across the country.
Kitchen staff
The Railways had failed to set up modern and sanitised kitchens and the kitchen staff was not properly trained and educated to perform their duties, the petition alleged. Also, the Railways had not framed rules and guidelines to maintain hygienic condition in its base kitchens. The petitioners urged the court to direct the Railways to modernise its kitchens and supply quality food to passengers.
