Two wings of MCD on the warpath

Mayor asked to initiate retirement proceedings against Additional Commissioner

NEW DELHI: The deliberative and executive wings of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi are once again on the warpath. In the latest development, MCD Standing Committee Chairman Jai Kishan Sharma has written to Mayor Farhad Suri asking him to initiate compulsory retirement proceedings against Additional Commissioner Raj Mohan Singh for his "misbehaviour" with the Councillors during the Standing Committee meeting held on Wednesday.

Mr. Sharma has also directed the Municipal Secretary to bring a preamble in this regard at the next Standing Committee meeting so that the Appointment Committee could take necessary action against the Additional Commissioner. The letter has also been forwarded to Lieutenant-Governor B. L. Joshi, Delhi Chief Secretary R. Narayanaswami and Municipal Commissioner A. K. Nigam.

At the last MCD Standing Committee meeting, the Councillors and Mr. Singh had clashed during a debate. While the Councillors had accused Mr. Singh of not providing proper information in a matter, Mr. Singh had shot back charging them with using "unparliamentary language" against him.

Though after the Standing Committee meeting, Mr. Sharma along with Leader of MCD House Jitender Kochar and Leader of Opposition in the Standing Committee Vijender Gupta had met the Commissioner to resolve the matter, but Mr. Nigam reportedly refused to intervene in the matter.

Later, Mr. Gupta wrote to Mr. Sharma expressing serious concern over the issue and demanding appropriate action against the Additional Commissioner for his misconduct and undermining the rights of the Councillors. Mr. Singh's action raised serious question mark on the democratic process of an elected body, he added.

In recent months there have been at least two similar cases when Councillors have confronted senior civic body officials.
