NEW DELHI: Former Prime Minister and Jan Morcha leader Vishwanath Pratap Singh on Friday visited Daya Basti in North Delhi to express solidarity with slum dwellers whose shanties were demolished by Northern Railway. He also lent a helping hand to some dwellers to reconstruct their shanties. Assuring the slum dwellers who had settled along the railway line in Daya Basti near Sarai Rohilla that he would continue their fight against alleged injustice done to them by Northern Railway, Mr. Singh said the action was totally against the Delhi Laws (Special Provisions) Act, 2006, that has put a one-year moratorium on all demolitions in the Capital. "This is a breach of law by the railway authorities," said Mr. Singh, alleging that no alternative arrangements have been made for the slum residents who have been forcibly driven away. The former Prime Minister also told the slum residents that he had spoken with Railway Minister Lalu Yadav who had assured him that he would visit the area soon. Vowing to fight for the cause of the poor and the downtrodden, Mr. Singh said while demolition of buildings and shops leads to a huge uproar in the city but nobody appears to be concerned when the tenements of the poor are pulled down.
