TIRUPUR: Tirupur Municipality has started receiving deposit for water connections through online counters at the State Bank of India main branch here. Municipal Chairman, M.N. Palanisamy, inaugurated it by receiving first application from a resident recently. Tokens were given to nearly 1,000 residents who were waiting in the queue. He said that there was no ceiling fixed and all those who pay deposit would get connections at the earliest. The Municipality had collected deposits from over 11,000 residents a year ago and gave water connections for 7,000 applicants so far. The remaining 4,000 residents were denied of such provision as they reside in unapproved layouts. Municipal Commissioner, M. Ashokan, said that priority would be given on the basis of online registration. "We made it clear that as far as unapproved areas are concerned, they are free to pay the deposits. But connections would be provided only if their areas get approval from the local body after paying development charges,'' he said. Municipality has fixed Rs.5,000 and Rs.10,000 as deposit for household connection and commercial connections respectively. SBI assistant general manager, R. Mani, said that they would receive deposits from 400 persons daily. The issuing of tokens prescribing the time and day to pay the deposit - would continue till July 31.
