Sushanta Talukdar

Guwahati: The Assam Government is actively considering a proposal to declare the State a "smoking prohibited State." Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said this in the Assembly on Friday.

On an average 42 lakh cigarettes were smoked every day in the State. This meant an average money outflow of Rs. 75 lakh every day. Cigarette manufacturers from outside the State earned about Rs. 280 crore annually.

The Assembly had passed a legislation banning smoking in public places.
