Facility for glaucoma treatment opened

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: Minister for Health and Family Welfare R. Ashok inaugurated a state-of-the-art laser facility for glaucoma treatment called "Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty" at the Shekhar Nethralaya here on Friday. This corrective laser treatment for glaucoma is supposed to be a safe alternative compared to the conventional "Argan laser trabeculoplasty" and is a less invasive form of laser therapy. This therapy is effective in treatment of eye problems such as open angle glaucoma, ocular hypertension, secondary glaucoma, pseudo-exfoliating glaucoma, among others.

Speaking after inaugurating the facility, Mr. Ashok said the Government was keen on promoting health tourism in the State and just as Bangalore was now known for information technology and biotechnology, it would soon be known as a healthcare destination.

The Government was also encouraging medical insurance schemes and was keen on promoting health insurance especially for people who were economically backward, he said.
