SALEM: The Salem Corporation has started cleaning the Vellaikuttai Odai, a major drainage channel in the city, here on Saturday.

Corporation Commissioner A.M. Selvam, after inspecting the cleaning operations, said the civic administration would remove the silt and ensure smooth flow of waste water in the channel.

Warned of action

He cautioned that the civic officials would initiate stern action against the commercial establishments if they were found dumping garbage into the channel. He asked the officials to speed up the cleaning work.

The waste water flow in the channel remained affected owing to blockages.

Though the Corporation had removed the silt from the channel during October and November last year, silt accumulated quickly owing to the continued dumping of garbage into it. A number of commercial establishments and residents in a few areas were disposing the garbage into the channel.

Overflow

Due to the blockages, even a brief spell of rain in the city would cause the channel to overflow and flood several residential colonies in the Kithcipalayam areas.

However, the Commissioner said that the entire length of the channel would be cleaned.

Campaign

Meanwhile, the civic administration had begun the intense `Clean the City' campaign in Ward 59 in Kondalampatti zone on Thursday. The sanitary workers had undertaken cleaning works in 14 places including Nattamangalam Main road, Sivasakthi Nagar, Matha Koovil Street, Robert Colony, Perumal Kovil Medu and Vasantha Nagar.

Cleaning of streets and drainage channels, removal of garbage and mosquito control measures were taken up simultaneously during the drive. The civic administration had involved about 60 sanitary workers in the drive.

Inspecting these works, Veerapandi MLA A. Raja said the drive would be taken up in all 60 wards of the Corporation. Earlier, Mr. Raja inspected the removal of silt from the Tirumanimutharu River channel.

He requested people and commercial establishments not to let the waste into river. Such acts would worsen the city's sanitary conditions.

He asked the people to cooperate with the civic officials in keeping the city clean.

Mr. Raja inaugurated the road works in a few places in the city. The Corporation had started laying roads in Velu Nagar, Ramaiyan Kadu Main Road, Sivasakthi Nagar, Chinnusamy Nagar, Perumal Koil Medu Street Seelanaickanpatti East Street at a cost of Rs. 57 lakh.
