VIRUDHUNAGAR : With the fireworks factories gearing up their production for the forthcoming Deepavali season, the Virudhunagar district administration has taken up an awareness campaign to prevent fire accidents. The Collector, S.S. Jawahar, inaugurated the `Awareness Year and Accident-free Deepavali' campaign at Sivakasi on Saturday. Over 200 employees of various fireworks units participated in a procession. The Collector and officials from Inspectorate of Factories, Labour Department, and Fire and Rescue Service visited three units in Tiruthangal and Sivakasi and spoke to them on the need to take all precautionary measures to save precious lives. The district administration has found out 19 causes for fire accidents causing deaths. "The most important aspect is about workers becoming conscious of the need to strictly follow safety measures," Mr. Jawahar said. The workers took a pledge to be careful at work and not to violate safety regulations. The employers were asked to ensure that their workers followed all safety measures and officials instructed to make frequent inspections, he added. The president of Tamil Nadu Fireworks and Amorces Manufacturers Association, A.P. Selvarajan, was present.
