Have compassion for the poor: Judge

Staff Reporter

"Play the role of `Good Samaritan'"

Ramanathapuram : The Judge of the Madras High Court, R. Banumathi, has called upon judicial officers to play the role of `Good Samaritan' for the poor, downtrodden, juvenile, and women.

Inaugurating a workshop for judicial officers here on Saturday, she said they should have compassionate attitude towards the downtrodden people whenever they approached the court for justice.

Priority should be given to cases related to crime against women, juvenile and cases related human rights violations.

She said there had been an upward trend in litigation, thanks to the population explosion.

People approached courts only after unsuccessfully trying out for a solution at various levels.

Hence, the judicial officers should try the cases quickly.

Stressing the importance of effective functioning of the subordinate courts, the Judge said if the functioning of the lower courts showed any let-up or slackness, damage would be too vast and beyond mending.

Justice A.K. Rajan (retd), resource person of the workshop, said judicial officers should develop a strong mind power so as to concentrate fully during the court hour.

S. Sambandam, former member, State Human Rights Commission, said judicial officers should give priority to cases related to rights violations.

A. Selvadoss, Principal District Judge, S. Satha Pillai, Additional District Judge, P. Balasubramanian, Chief Judicial Magistrate, and others spoke.
