GULBARGA: Teachers have a crucial role in bringing to limelight the talent of children in science and technology, Deputy Director of the Public Instructions N.B. Patil has said. He was inaugurating a training-cum-workshop on the biodiversity for teachers from schools in the district. Mr. Patil commended the initiative taken by Karnataka Vignana Parishat for organising the workshop to create awareness about the need for protecting biodiversity and using it scientifically for improving the economic status of the farming community. There was need to make science education more attractive with innovative teaching practices. Laboratories in schools should be well-equipped, he said.
Extinction threat
Deputy Conservator of Forests (Social Forestry) Srinivasulu said that many plant and animal species facing the threat of extinction owing to over-exploitation by human beings. An effort should be made to increase the forest cover in the country, he added. Although official records said that forest cover in the State was over 20 per cent of the total geographical area, real forests covered only 3 per cent, he said. The teaching community should engage themselves in efforts to increase the green cover not only in the forests, but also in the urban areas.
Preserving biodiversity
Without preserving biodiversity, there was little hope of increasing food grain production, Mr. Srinivasulu said. District convener of the 14th National Children's Science Conference 2006 Girish Kadlewad underscored the importance of creating awareness among schoolchildren regarding the need for protecting biodiversity.
