RIOT OF COLOURS: A painting by Shyamal Mukherjee
NEW DELHI: A fortnight-long solo exhibition of art works by Shyamal Mukherjee opened at Art `n' Soul Gallery here on Saturday. Shyamal -- who did his education in art from Kolkata's Rabindra Bharati University -- has depicted the life of West Bengal's people in his paintings. About his works of art, Shyamal says: "It is a pleasurable exercise for me to create art work on glass or acrylic sheet. The concept of doing art work on glass came to me while I was studying painting. I just started it with a curiosity of developing a work of art on the reverse side of the glass. And it was quite a satisfying experience of seeing the stage-by-stage development of the work. Now that curiosity has become a challenge for me. I use colour and imposition of forms in my pieces of art to achieve a variety of compositions." At the preview of the exhibition, Art `n' Soul Director Shefali Somani said: "Shyamal's works are a riot of vibrant colours, accompanied by a sense of joy. His immaculate handling of the difficult medium of reverse painting and the depiction of the simple life of common people in his signature caricature style will amuse and enthral art lovers." Parthapratim Deb, Dean, Faculty of Visual Arts Rabindra Bharati University, says: "Even during his student days, Shyamal was creating art works on the reverse side of glass or acrylic sheet. And at present he has earned a name for himself. He has hopefully taken the inner perception of folk elements and with them added a very inspiring visualisation. "
