MADURAI: The city police on Saturday rescued a two-and-a-half-year-old boy from an abductor, who demanded a ransom of Rs.5 lakh from the boy's parents, on Saturday. The police said Harish, son of a teacher, Jeevanram, was missing since Friday evening. A youth called his mother, J. Prema, on her mobile phone and demanded the ransom for the safe return of the child. The parents approached the Teppakulam police, who traced the phone call to a public booth. Later, a police team, led by Inspector A. Godwin Jagadeesh Kumar, zeroed in on a suspect, S. Sivanath (22), who during interrogation confessed to have kidnapped the child. The boy was rescued safely from a house near South Gate. Police said that the accused, a relative of Prema, had planned the kidnap for repaying a huge loan he had incurred to meet the medical expenses of his father. Sivanath has been arrested.
