Six arrested on gambling charge

NEW DELHI: Six persons allegedly engaged in gambling have been arrested by the East Delhi police.

According to the police, the accused -- identified as Suraj Singh, Satish Kumar, Vijay Malhotra, Naresh Sharma, Prem Kumar and Nand Prakash -- were arrested in a raid carried out at Sabzi Mandi (Jheel) in Geeta Colony on Friday evening. The police claim to have recovered Rs. 70,370 in cash as stake money and playing cards from the accused.

The police said the accused were businessmen of the area and gambling was on in front of the shop of the market president. Further investigations are on.

Teacher commits suicide

NEW DELHI: A school teacher allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in her house at Adarsh Nagar in North-West Delhi on Friday evening. Her family members have alleged that her husband had been torturing her for dowry.

According to the police, Kiran Chopra, wife of Arun Chopra, a resident of Majlis Park in Adarsh Nagar, hanged herself around 8-30 p.m. She was married to Arun in July 2001.

The family members of Kiran alleged that Arun, who worked in a transport company, would often beat her up and ask her to bring money.
