Parcel train to Delhi flagged off

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Those who transport heavy goods from the city to Delhi and vice-versa in trucks have some good news from the Railways. Now, they can transport the goods by train and reduce the travel time by half and also cut the cost considerably.

South Western Railway (SWR) promises to take the consignments to Delhi in less than three days by express train. Trucks normally take up to seven days to reach Delhi. The 15-wagon special parcel train called "Rajdhani Express-Special Parcel Service'' was flagged off on Saturday from Whitefield Goods Shed by P.N. Shukla, chief operations manager, SWR.

The train has been entrusted to M/s. Indo Arya Central Transport Ltd. under the new scheme formulated by the Indian Railways for fast and safe movement of premium cargo (time sensitive cargo) at competitive rates.

Mr. Shukla said the launching of the service was a turning point for the Railways for synergising transportation, cargo and warehousing agencies to meet the needs of the customers who were looking for total transport solution. He said express cargo services were economically priced compared to other such services.

The single-window service ensured guaranteed delivery at the doorstep of the customer and hassle-free inter State movement of goods. He said the Indian Railways was hoping to ensure that these initiatives met the needs of its customers duly taking the feedback from the customers.

He requested the customers to respond and use the services effectively so that the costly assets of the nation were put to the intended purpose.

Mahesh Mangal, Bangalore Divisional Railway Manager said Railways would run more exclusive parcel services to State capitals.
