The job scenario in retail and distribution sector appears to be bright with global retail giants like Wal-Mart looking to make a foray in the Indian market and a wholesale major Metro Cash&Carry already starting operations in Bangalore. Not just that, people from the industry feel that with domestic players planning to enter the sector, the opportunities could be lucrative in the next five years. According to A. John Idicula, Head of Human Resources, Metro Cash&Carry-India, Hyderabad, "Total retail and wholesale space in India under organised sector is expected to go to 90 million sq.ft. from 30 million sq.ft. by end of 2007." The sector is looking at a revenue figure of $250 million by 2010 and an investment of Rs. 40,000 crore in the coming years. Answering queries of students present in YUVA 2006, Mr. Idicula pointed out that this sector is going to match the IT and ITES sector in terms of employment in the next few years. With lucrative salaries matching that of an engineer at the entry level, retail and distribution sector has a lot to offer. Careers in the sector are divided into two segments. Operations, where on-floor functions will be handled i.e. direct selling from the stores. Second is buying and merchandising, which comprises of buying for the stores. Not just individuals but small entrepreneurs also have job opportunities in this sector. Eligibility: Class 10th to MBA or engineering
