Dharmapuri: Dharmapuri is a fertile land of archaeological importance. Tradition and culture of ancient, medieval and sangam age are available in Dharmapuri district. Evidences relating to the ancient tradition and culture of Tamil Nadu were identified during an excavation carried out by the Department of Archaeology at Modhur near Dharmapuri during 2005, said the Special Commissioner of Archaeology, T.S. Sridhar, here on Sunday. Releasing a booklet on archaeology in Dharmapuri Mr. Sridhar said that hero stones are found in large numbers in Dharmapuri district. Along with this dolmens, stone henges, rock paintings and cairn circles are also found in the district. The Department of Archaeology has been involved in research including excavation, scriptures, inscription and monuments throughout the State. A total of 87 monuments in Tamil Nadu, including three in Dharmapuri district, are under the control of the State Department of Archaeology. Evidence on human settlements dating back to the period of Ashoka and Adhiyaman is available in Dharmapuri district. With Dharmapuri having a rich history of archaeological evidence steps have been initiated by the Department to promote heritage tourism in the district Mr. Sridhar added. Collector M. Chandrasekaran was present.
