Experienced professionals turn up in large numbers on the final day; many were looking for better prospects

Coimbatore: Young people with work experience ranging from two to ten years dominated the The Hindu Opportunities Fair 2006 that concluded on the CODISSIA Trade Fair Complex here on Sunday.

On the second and final day of the job fair, candidates began queuing up early outside the gates of the complex.

Compared to Saturday, there were larger numbers of experienced professionals than students who had recently completed their graduation and those with less than a couple of years of work experience. Around 9,000 candidates visited the fair.

Tests

Tests and interviews proceeded at a brisk pace in the morning, with almost all the participating companies short listing candidates and making job offers. In the afternoon, the pace slowed as the number of job seekers gradually dwindled.

Many of those who sought employment on Sunday were looking for a better job than the one they had.

"Today the quality of people coming for recruitment is better and there are fewer freshers. Last year, we selected close to 50 people and this year, the number and quality is better than last year. People have started recognising us," said S. Vishnu Potty, Director and Coimbatore Centre Head, Cognizant Technology Solutions India Pvt. Ltd.

`Fantastic first year'

"Some candidates have come from Chennai, Bangalore and Thiruvananthapuram. Most of them have experience of two to five years, and are looking for better prospects," Mr. Potty said. He observed that the Coimbatore Centre of Cognizant had experienced a "fantastic first year" after having started operations in August, and recruited 700 people in 11 months, compared to expectations of 400.

"We attribute that to the quality of people from this area and the work culture here. Coimbatore is a textile and engineering hub, and the work culture is well tuned towards our operations. People are hard working. They have the right attitude to work and a strong urge to learn. There are many colleges that are extremely good, and there is a good bunch of people from Salem and Erode as well as Kerala," he added.

K.L. Narasimhan, Assistant Manager - Human Resource, Patni Computer Systems Ltd., said that the recruitment of the company for jobs in software application had been "according to expectations" for vacancies in Chennai or Mumbai.

Salary

"Yesterday and today there were 30 to 40 people. There were more men than women, and we are likely to be ending up with 12 to 15 people. We will decide by tomorrow. Salary will depend on experience, qualification and the company in which they have been working," he said.

Pradeep P. Suthan, Head - Corporate Communications, IBS Software Services Private Ltd., narrated how an applicant working in a small company with a monthly salary of Rs. 6,000 had attended the interview with expectations of getting Rs. 10,000. Based on her qualifications and experience, the company hired her for Rs. 25,000 a month.
