Pakistan rallies to hold Germany

TERRASSA (Spain): After making a brave comeback, Pakistan conceded a late goal to draw with Germany 3-3 in the Champions Trophy hockey tournament here on Sunday. Sohail Abbas (2) and Shakeel Abbasi scored for Pakistan. For Germany, Christopher Zeller (2) and Matthias Witthaus scored.

After trailing 2-0 in the first half, Pakistan recovered through Sohail Abbas with a brace of goals. Abbasi, with 14 minutes remaining, put Pakistan in the lead. But Matthias Witthaus struck late in the match to earn Germany the draw.

On Saturday, three penalty corner conversions by Taeke Taekema helped the Netherlands seal a 4-2 win against Argentina.

Teun de Nooijer scored a brilliant individual goal to complete the tally for the Europeans while Pedro Ibarra and Lucas Cammareri netted for the South Americans. In another match, Germany and Spain drew 1-1.

Germany got off to a flying start against the host, thanks to an individual goal by Tibor Weissenborn in the fourth minute. He took the ball all the way from his own half into the Spanish circle to slide it past goalkeeper Bernadino Herrera from the left backline.

Despite its control and short passing, Spain was unable to break through the Germans' defence until five minutes before the final whistle when Santiago Freixa scored from a penalty corner.

Spain 1 (Santiago Freixa 65) drew with Germany 1 (Tibor Weissenborn 4).

Netherlands 4 (Taeke Taekema 25, 57, 63, Teun de Nooijer 55) bt Argentina 2 (Pedro Ibarra 42, Lucas Cammereri 59). — Agencies
