Somnath's dream project becomes a reality

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI : The monsoon session of Parliament will see the advent of the round-the-clock dedicated Lok Sabha Television Channel (LSTV), a dream project of Speaker Somnath Chatterjee.

It would go on stream at 0800 hours on July 24, the first day of the session.

Work on the LSTV began some 18 months ago after the Speaker expressed his desire to extend the visitors galleries of the Lok Sabha to every house in the country. It made its debut albeit in a limited hour format, during the second half of the recently concluded budget session.

Programmes

The telecast on the channel begins with an interview of Mr. Chatterjee who elaborates on what prompted him to think about this innovative tool to strengthen his efforts to bring Parliament closer to the people.

This will be followed by the reactions of Members of Parliament.

A combination of live and recorded programmes will be shown with a mix of panel discussions and educative/informative programmes. Issues before Lok Sabha/Lok Sabha Ke Samaksh Muddey, Today's Agenda, Party Stand, Sansad Nama, Awaaz Aap ki and Sansad Sey Sadak Tak are a few of them.

It would also offer a re-run of the day's proceedings late in the night and a capsule format of the highlights.

Another project is the Parliament Museum — a hi-tech story-telling museum on Parliament and the evolution of the parliamentary system — is nearing completion.

It will be thrown open to the public with formal inauguration by the President on the eve of Independence Day.
