Pondicherry
Deepa H. Ramakrishnan
PONDICHERRY: The Social Welfare Minister P Angalane on Sunday said that persons with haemophilia could also be provided monthly assistance for medicines along with patients with blood pressure and diabetes. Speaking at a function organised by the Haemophilia Society of Pondicherry, Mr. Angalane said, "We have a specified budget for patients with blood pressure and diabetes and give them a monthly assistance for the purchase of medicines. The same procedure could be followed in the case of haemophilia persons. If they could furnish doctor certificates, we could include them in the scheme. The cost of one injection is around Rs 3,000, which is quite expensive." Mr. Angalane was speaking after handing over certificates to children with haemophilia, who were provided training in computer applications. The Pondicherry Corporation for Development for Women and Handicapped Persons Ltd sponsored the training. JIPMER Director K.S.V.K. Subba Rao said that the institute would take steps to stock the anti haemophilia factor medicines in JIPMER. "We normally stock small quantities of the medicine for emergency cases since it is very expensive. We are making efforts to get a special budget for these patients." Corporation chairperson, M.K. Sayeekumari, said the corporation was also sponsoring training for the mothers of haemophilia children. "They are being taught to make things like agarbathis and soap oil, which are income generating activities." Nalini, president, Haemophilia Society said haemophilia was an organ disease in which blood does not clot in the body.
Expensive treatment
"In India one out of 6,000 to 8,000 children has the disease and most times boys are the ones affected. Treatment for the disease is very expensive, we need a minimum of Rs 50,000 for one person for a year. The Government does not support the treatment. Medicines are not being stocked in any of the Government hospitals."
