VILLUPURAM: At the convocation function held in Theivani Ammal College for Women here on Saturday, V.S. Prasad, Director, National Assessment and Accreditation (NAAC), Bangalore, conferred degrees on 313 candidates. Principal Ponnammal K. Pandian and college secretary S. Selvamani gave away the medals to 43 rank-holders. The college has to its credit "A" grade awarded by the NAAC and has also obtained the ISO 9001-2000 certification. While delivering the convocation address, Mr. Prasad said the college had all the essential components to become one of the good educational institutions, ie., the physical, intellectual and spiritual ambience. Mr. Prasad said the purpose of education was two-fold: to impart the ability among the students to make a living, and to teach them to become responsible citizens. He said that every year as many as three million candidates were graduating out of the colleges and universities, but only 25 per cent of them were employable. This was due to the mismatch between the qualification and ability to convert knowledge into skills.
