RAMANATHAPURAM: Host Ramanathapuram won a maiden title as it beat Madurai 4-3 via tie-breaker in the final of the Tamil Nadu State junior inter-district hockey championship at Seethakathy Sethupathy Stadium here on Sunday. Interestingly, Ramanathapuram won all its four matches through tie-breakers only. Madurai took the lead in the 37th minute, when Ramachandran scored following a penalty corner.
Good save
Thamarai equalised for the host in the 53rd minute, converting a penalty stroke. Madurai could have clinched the issue, when a penalty stroke was awarded in the 62nd minute, but goalkeeper Kabaleeswaran proved too good for Sathyaseelan. In the tie-breaker Karthik, Ilangovan and Thamarai scored for Ramanathapuram. For Madurai, Ramachandran and Nagendran succeeded. Kabaleeswaran saved the attempts of Kalidas, Sathyaseelan and Muthukumaran. Muthusami, collector, Ramanathapuram district presided and Sanjeev Kumar, I.G. of Police, South Zone gave away the prizes. Special Awards (Rs.1000 each): Satheesh (Ramanathapuram), Karthik (Tuticorin), Sathyaraj (Madurai), Ashok Kumar (Tirunelveli) and Meganathan (Kanchipuram). Player of the tournament: Kabaleeswaran (Ramanathapuram).
