Airport may get EMS certification by Aug. 15

V.S. Palaniappan

Coimbatore: Airports Authority of India (AAI) has entered the last stage of preparation for getting Environment Management System (EMS) certification for the Coimbatore Airport by an international agency by August 15.

According to sources, a consultant has already been appointed by the AAI for putting in place the necessary systems.

Preliminary and certification audit has been completed and the work for evolving an environment policy and documentation are in the final stages.

The awarding agency and consultants are expected to conduct their final surveillance audit, a pre-certification process, any time now. Coimbatore Airport has already obtained ISO 9001 certification by implementing quality management standards.

When contacted, the Airport Director (in charge), R.S. D'Cruz, confirmed that efforts were underway to get the EMS 14000 certification before August 15.

A nodal officer in charge of ISO certification at the airport was assigned the responsibility of putting in place the arrangements for environment management and fine-tuning them, he said.

Environment policy/manual (as in the case of quality manual for quality certification) was under preparation and the policy documented for implementation at every level and field of the airport.

The participation and cooperation of the airlines making use of Coimbatore Airport will also be sought for effective implementation of the system.

The objective would be to ascertain and implement what best could be offered in ensuring effective environment management in terms of preventing air, water and ground level pollution.

Once the systems were implemented, the Airport could minimise the risk of bird hits. EMS certification, though not mandatory, would help Coimbatore Airport attract airline operators to start international services from here, he said.
