Ghantaravam by BJP

HYDERABAD: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will organise a protest programme in various centres in the State on Monday as part of a nation-wide programme against price rise and terrorism.

State BJP president N. Indrasena Reddy told reporters on Sunday that the cadre would make a rattling noise by beating empty plates from 11 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. to draw the attention of the Government. The main programme would be scheduled at Abids circle in the city. - Special Correspondent

EAMCET counselling

HYDERABAD: A total of 2,253 candidates took admission at the ongoing Engineering Agricultural and Medical Common Entrance Test-2006 counselling here on Sunday. The EAMCET-2006 Camp Officer in a statement put the cumulative seats filled as on July 23 at 25,819 against a total of 63,396 seats. - Staff Reporter

Burglary in temple

KARIMNAGAR: Burglars attacked a temple in Mamidipalli village of Konaraopeta mandal and decamped with the booty including the idols of the presiding deities of Lord Rama, Sita, Lakshman and Hanuman, three temple bells and hundi collections on Saturday night.

The police said that the burglars broke open the latches of Sitarama temple. The stolen property was estimated to be worth over Rs. 25,000. Villagers expressed their ire over the burglary and offered special prayers in the village for the recovery of the stolen property. - Staff Reporter

Two naxals arrested

Kakinada: Two naxalites — Setti Venkata Ramana (21) alias Madhu and Pirla Durga Babu (20) alias Jeevan, members of the Kona Belt area committee of CPI (ML) Janashakti belonging to Ramachandran group were arrested while they were extorting money from the Principal of a college at Perumallapuram, at knifepoint. Two country made revolvers used by them were also seized.

The police said that the naxals approached the Principal on July 10 and demanded Rs. 50,000 but received Rs. 25,000 towards the first instalment. They were nabbed while receiving the second instalment at AV Nagaram junction. - Correspondent

Two persons murdered?

ANANTAPUR: One Hanumanthu, key accused in the murder of the then Telugu Desam ZPTC member from Somandepalli Aswartha Narayana, was allegedly hacked to death by unidentified persons at Gaddam Nagepalli village in Hindupur Rural mandal late on Saturday night. According to the police he was attacked when he was sleeping in his relatives' house. In another incident, one Obulapathi was chased and hacked to death in Guntakal town on Sunday over a financial dispute. After a heated argument the persons whom he had borrowed money from allegedly chased and hacked him to death. - Staff Reporter

Trough may bring rain

HYDERABAD: A trough of low pressure lay over the Sate for the second day on Sunday, but this time extending from Orissa to south Tamil Nadu across the Coastal Andhra.

Under its influence, rain is likely at a few places in Telangana and coastal Andhra on Monday. There will be isolated rainfall in Rayalaseema.

During the 24-hour period ended Sunday morning, many places in Telangana and coastal Andhra received rain. Utnoor recorded a rainfall of 5 cm. - Special Correspondent

ZP meet postponed

KAKINADA : The Zilla Parishad general body meeting, the first after the new members took oath, scheduled for Sunday was postponed for want of quorum. As `ashadham' was considered inauspicious, both Congress and TDP members stayed out of the meeting. Chairman Chelloboyina Srinivasa Venugopala Krishna, the lone member present, announced the postponement of the meeting to July 30. Zilla Parishad CEO Nagesh Babu and district officials attended. - Correspondent

Man `beaten' to death

KAKINADA : A petty vendor Dakamuri Srinivas, 35, who used to eke out a living selling cigarettes and snacks on a push-cart near Gandhinagar market, was beaten to death allegedly by one Pothu Venkata Ramana, 36, following a dispute over repayment of Rs. 1,000 on Sunday. Police Circle Inspector Balla Lakshminarayana said Srinivas tried to run away but collapsed at the rythu bazar shed. - Correspondent

Free medical camp held

Kakinada: Over 600 persons were screened for various ailments at the free medical camp organised at Annammaghati centre here on Sunday under the aegis of Mutha Education Society. M.B.R. Sarma of Government General Hospital inaugurated the camp.

Medicines worth Rs. 3000 were distributed to patients. Local MLA Mutha Gopalakrishna and Mayor K. Saroja visited the camp. - Correspondent

Funds promised for indoor stadium

Srikakulam: District Collector V.N. Vishnu has said that he will initiate steps for improvement of indoor stadium and release required funds in addition to the Rs. 3 lakhs sanctioned by the Sports Development Authority.

He was speaking after inaugurating the two-day district selections organised by the District Shuttle Badminton Association here on Saturday - Special Correspondent

ACB raid on Excise official's residence

KURNOOL: The ACB officials raided the house of Assistant Excise Superintendent Ch. Venkateswarlu at Venkataramana Colony here on Saturday and found documents of properties and valuables disproportionate to his known sources of income. Raids were also carried out in the residences of his close relatives elsewhere in the State. — Staff Reporter

Meeting held

CHITTOOR: A meeting of the struggle committee and the depositors of Chittoor Co-operative Town Bank was held here on Sunday. Committee president Pattabhi Ramaswamy Reddy explained the steps taken to revive the bank. Proposals have been sent to the Reserve Bank for relaxing the restrictions imposed on the bank and for issuing instructions for its revival.

MPDO sought

KADAPA: Congress ZPTC member of Chennur N. Chinnaiah lodged a complaint with ZP Chairperson D. Jyothi Reddy on Sunday demanding action against Chennur MPDO Penchalaiah. The MPDO made derogatory remarks against him in his presence in Chennur MPP meeting, Mr. Chinnaiah alleged in representations submitted to the ZP chief and Collector M.T.
