TDP seeks probe into encounter killings

HYDERABAD: The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has sought an enquiry by a competent agency into the encounter killings in Nallamala forests early on Sunday in which eight Maoists lost their lives.

K. Vijayarama Rao, Telugu Desam Party leader, at a press conference on Sunday blamed the administration's mishandling for the present state of affairs. "Once the Government invited them as State guests for talks and now it is killing them indiscriminately."

He said the Government thought it could handle the naxal situation better than the Telugu Desam Party regime.

However, it had failed miserably. The Telugu Desam Party neither believed in the Maoists' theory, that their goals could be achieved by the barrel of the gun, nor approved of `illegal' killings.

Responding to a query, Mr. Rao said the party would not like to suggest an officer or any particular agency for the enquiry.

The Telugu Desam Party was leaving it to Government to decide on who would conduct the enquiry. Naxalism should be recognised as a socio-economic problem and treated accordingly, he added.

Scholarships

On the issue of scholarships to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and weaker sections' students, he said it was unfortunate that Government was not considering the issue seriously. It was State's duty to ensure that underprivileged students had access to education.
