Country bomb explodes near Nagapattinam

NAGAPATTINAM: A country bomb exploded on the bank of a pond at Sellur, near here, on Sunday evening, keeping the police on tenterhooks. They are already investigating into the explosion of a country bomb in the house of a police constable at Thamaraikulam here on Saturday evening.

A senior police official told The Hindu on Sunday that a country bomb, wrapped in a plastic cover and kept in the house of constable Sundarajan, residing in the Thamaraikulam area, exploded on Saturday evening. But nobody was in the house when the incident occurred. Mr. Sundarajan was posted for duty at Velankanni and his wife and children were away at Velankanni on Saturday.

On Sunday evening, another country bomb exploded on the bank of a pond at Sellur. The police secured two persons for interrogation

Standard VIII public examination

CHENNAI: The Department of Government Examinations has called for applications for admission to the Standard VIII public examination (private study) to be held in December 2006.

Applications can be had from July 24 in person or post from the offices of the Deputy Director of Government Examinations at Tirunelveli, Madurai, Coimbatore, Tiruchi, Cuddalore, Vellore and Chennai, a release here said.

The last date for submitting applications is August 18. — Special Correspondent

MBA results

CHENNAI: The results of the common entrance test conducted on July 17 by the Consortium of Self-financing Professional, Arts and Science Colleges in Tamil Nadu for management quota M.B.A/M.C.A seats in self-financing institutions have been published on the website, www.tnsfconsortium.org, says a release here. — Special Correspondent

B.E/B.Tech entrance test results

CHNNAI: The results of the common entrance test for management quota B.E/B.Tech seats conducted by the Consortium of Self-financing Professional, Arts and Science Colleges in Tamil Nadu on July 15 and 16 have been published on the consortium's website www.tnsfconsortium.org, a press release here said.

A total of 34,401 candidates appeared for the test, it added. — Special Correspondent

"Simplify norms for building mosques"

CHENNAI: The Indian Union Muslim League's Chennai district unit on Sunday urged the State Government to simplify the procedure for granting permission to construct mosques.

Its Secretary Jainul Abiddin said here that a resolution adopted at a meeting of Ulemas and representatives of Mohalla Jamaats and Dargas in and around Chennai pleaded with the Government to fulfil the longstanding demand of the minorities by enacting a law to provide reservation to them. — Special Correspondent

Teacher suspended

HOSUR: Following the swooning of 10 girls who were forced to kneel down on the floor, a teacher has been placed under suspension by Chief Education Officer Suganya here on Saturday. According to official sources, Alphonsa reportedly asked 120 girl students of Class VII E of the Hosur Government Girls Higher Secondary School to kneel down as they were found to be talking in the class. Subsequently 10 girls fainted and were admitted to Government Hospital. — Staff Reporter

Bicycles, books distributed to students

KARAIKAL: The Centre for Education and Development Alternatives (CEDA) Trust, an NGO, distributed bicycles, books and other education materials to the school children in the tsunami-hit areas here on Saturday.

S. Abel Rozario, Joint Director of Civil Supplies, Karaikal, and A. Sowdha Ummal, Arignar Anna Arts College distributed the articles to the children.

A. Backiyam, Director of CEDA Trust, said that 576 school children belonging to 8 villages were given free books, notebooks, uniforms and school bags and 92 children studying in the VI, VII and VIII standards were provided free bicycles.

Woman

murdered

TIRUCHI: A 36-year-old man allegedly murdered his wife in their house at Kavutharasanallur near Samayapuram in the district on Saturday night and committed suicide. The couple - Kadirvel and Kalavathy (30) - were married 10 years ago.

The police said family quarrel led to the murder of the woman.

According to police sources, Kadirvel, who was a painter, threw a grinding stone on his wife when she was fast asleep killing her.

Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 112.27 feet on Sunday.

The inflow was 43,641 cusecs and the outflow 22,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Four killed

in accidents

TIRUNELVELI: Four persons, including two teenagers, were killed in two separate road accidents in the district on Saturday.

The police said T. Deivaraj (48) of Kadalaiyoor Road in Kovilpatti had come to Courtallam with his family members and relatives.

When they were returning home on Saturday morning, the van in which they were travelling dashed against a roadside tree at Vasudevanallur, killing Deivaraj, his son, D. Thanga Ruban (18), his friend's son, H. Gowtham (16) on the spot.

Deivaraj's wife, D. Vijayalakshmi, his relative, Gurusamy, and Gowtham's mother, Bhuvaneshwari, sustained injuries and were admitted to the hospital.

The Vasudevanallur police are investigating.

In another accident, T. Bala Nambirajan (23) of Kalakkad was fatally knocked down by a speeding lorry near his village on Saturday.

The Thirukkurunkudi police arrested the lorry driver, R. Seramadurai (29).

Power shutdown

TIRUNELVELI : Power supply in the following areas will be affected on July 24 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. as monthly maintenance works will be carried out at Old Pettai sub-station: Tirunelveli Town, Old Pettai, Gandhi Nagar, Pettai, Thiruppanikarisalkulam, Vaagaikulam, Kunnathur and Pettai Industrial Estate, according to the Executive Engineer, Urban, Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, A. Medical camp

ERODE: Superintendent of Police Sonal V. Misra on Sunday inaugurated a medical camp for the police personnel at the District Police Office compound. A team of doctors examined the officials. Blood test, diabetic and hypertension tests were taken. This is the second medical test conducted for the police personnel here within a week's time. - Staff Reporter

600 traffic violation cases in a day

ERODE: As many as 600 cases were registered here on Saturday alone for violation of traffic rules. As per the instructions of Superintendent of Police Sonal V. Misra, the police conducted vehicle checks in the district on Saturday night.

They registered 600 cases - 104 for drunken driving, 109 for speeding and 12 cases for using cellular phones while driving two-wheelers among other cases.

The violators were asked to appear before the Judicial Magistrates on Monday.

Two killed

ATTUR: Two persons were killed in an accident near Peddanacikanpalayam here on Saturday.

The police said Mohan (21) of Bazaar Street and Lenin (23) of West Matha Kovil Street, were riding on a motorcycle when a lorry hit the vehicle from behind.

While Lenin was killed on the spot, Mohan died on way to the hospital.
