`Transport corporations will not be privatised'

TIRUCHI: Transport Minister K.N. Nehru, on Sunday, said that the State Transport Corporations (STC) would not be privatised.

Allaying fears among employees of STCs in this regard, Mr. Nehru said the State Government was keen on improving the transport sector in order to enhance services on a par with private operators.

Inaugurating a seminar on "accident-free driving" here, Mr. Nehru said the STCs were the largest public sector undertakings in Tamil Nadu, with more than one lakh staff. The Government was concerned over frequent road accidents and keen to prevent them and make the State accident-free.

He honoured 28 bus drivers with a 10-year track record of service without accident. He also inaugurated an eye camp for drivers, in which 500 from various regions were screened.

The Inspector General of Police, Central Zone, M.S. Jaffar Sait, said the number of those killed in road accidents in the zone had exceeded 1,500 last year. Over 800 persons had been killed this year so far.
