JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Government has decided to complete all construction and development works for utilising the water from Narmada project by March 2009. The supply of the State's share in the Narmada waters is expected to begin in October this year. State Water Resources Minister Sanwarlal Jat, presiding over a meeting of the Narmada Task Force here over the week-end, said the construction of canals, making the distributaries and installation of power supply centres would be completed to match with the availability of water. The meeting was informed that the Narmada waters would be partially available at the southern border of the State by October next. The water from neighbouring Gujarat will fulfil the drinking and irrigation needs of Jalore and Barmer districts. While the officials attending the meeting deliberated on converting the Task Force into an Empowered Committee to give it more teeth, Mr. Jat said the good quality of all construction works would be ensured and members of the water utilisers' committees would be provided training to improve capacity. Among others, Minister of State for Energy Gajendra Singh; Additional Chief Secretary, Infrastructure, D.C. Samant; Principal Secretary, Water Resources, S.N. Thanvi; and Secretary, Public Health Engineering Department, Bharat Meena, attended the meeting. OM)
