MADURAI: Anna University has roped in global IT major, Microsoft, to participate in its placement programmes in the State in the `big paymasters' category to recruit engineering graduates from its affiliated colleges. Microsoft officials have given their `in principle' nod for recruiting candidates through a formal placement programme to be held in the coming months. "This is the first time that the IT major has agreed to recruit candidates through campus placement route. Successful candidates will get an annual salary of around Rs. nine lakh. The selection of our students for its Hyderabad facility will give further impetus to our State-level Placement Programme," P. Mannar Jawahar, Director, Centre for University-Industry Collaboration, Anna University, told The Hindu on Saturday. The university conducted a placement programme at Kamaraj College of Engineering and Technology near Virudhunagar on July 20 and 21 for Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in which 134 candidates were provisionally selected from the Madurai zone. Dr. Jawahar, who was here to monitor the programme, said the university was looking at getting another big paymaster Google. The first placement programme of Microsoft will take place on the university campus in Chennai. The university would invite companies that fit into different categories such as bulk recruiter, big paymaster and regular ones. Only candidates with 80 per cent marks and above would meet Microsoft's requirement. Anna University was negotiating with Microsoft to make it 75 per cent so that those from rural areas would stand a chance. The required branches for Microsoft are Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Information Technology.
