NIZAMABAD: The first general body meeting of the newly-formed Zilla Parishad witnessed a heated argument for a brief period between the ruling party members and the Opposition Telugu Desam Party over the issue of release of Nizamsagar water for irrigation purpose. After the swearing in ceremony of Zilla Parishad chairperson Gadari Anita Rajeswar Reddy and vice-chairman Taher Bin Hamdan was over, initiating the discussion, the Opposition floor leader, V. Mohan Reddy, demanded that the Government release Nizamsagar water in view of the dry conditions prevailing in the district. When the TDP members insisted on the release of water and a debate on the subject, Congress member Naidu Prakash criticised them pointing to the failures of the previous Government, resulting in charges and counter-charges between the members.
MP intervenes
In his effort to pacify the members, Member of Parliament Madhu Goud Yaskhi prevailed upon them that since the election code was in force no crucial decision regarding the release of water could be taken. "The demand put forth by the TDP members carries weight as it relates to farmers therefore it can be considered later," he suggested. The TDP members argued that when water was released from Nagarjunasagar even if the election code had been in force what was the objection vis-à-vis the release from Nizamsagar. Earlier, as soon as the general body began, the chairperson-elect, Anita, and the vice chairman-elect, Taher Bin Hamdan, were sworn in. They were administered oath of office and secrecy by District Collector I.S. Sri Naresh. They were also garlanded and honoured with shawl. All the women members belonging to different political parties also greeted Ms. Anita. Later, the members one after another was called and felicitated with shawl and garland by each senior officer.
