Lack of classrooms in schools

Shimla: With the expansion of educational institutions in Himachal Pradesh, especially at elementary and secondary levels, schools in the state are facing a lack of classrooms.

About 3,682 primary schools in the State have only two classrooms while 5,303 middle schools are conducting eight classes with just three rooms, officials said here.

In order to improve the situation, the State Government has decided to construct 10,527 additional rooms, of which 3,330 rooms have already been constructed while 6,163 rooms would be constructed in the next two years.

Elementary education Director B M Nanta said that initially the rooms had to be provided by the community for opening new schools without charging any rent and these would later be vacated after rooms were constructed by the Government.

He said that in some of the schools the number of students was low and it was not difficult to accommodate them in two or three rooms.

The State Government had also upgraded the Directorate of Primary Education as the Directorate of Elementary Education and it was implementing the Rs. 532-crore `Sarv Shiksha Abhiyan', he said. - PTI.
