Criminal case against seven police officials

Muzaffarnagar: A criminal case has been registered against seven police officials on Sunday for their alleged involvement in a ``fake'' encounter in 1997, official sources said.

Harish Arora was allegedly killed in a ``fake'' encounter by the police in New Mandi Kotwali police station area here on March 5, 1997.

Following a complaint filed by the victim's mother Sumitra Devi, National Human Rights Commission had directed the U.P. Government to conduct an inquiry into the killing, they said.

Seven police officials including the Inspector of New Mandi Kotwali police station were found guilty in the Crime Branch CID inquiry and a criminal case has been registered against them.

No arrests have been made so far, sources said.

Passenger found dead in train compartment

Kanpur: A middle-aged passenger was found dead in a compartment of a Delhi-bound train here on Sunday.

The passenger, identified as 40-year-old Shyam Sundar Jha from Bihar, was found dead in a third AC coach of the New Delhi-bound North East Express, police said.

According to Government Railway Police sources, the body of Jha was brought down from the train at the station here and sent for post-mortem to determine the cause of his death.

Child killed in

wall collapse

Etawah: A child was killed and three others injured when the wall of a house collapsed in Luhiyankalan village of the district, police said on Sunday. The accident occurred on Saturday when the wall collapsed while the children were standing near it, they said.The injured were admitted to the primary health centre.

Noted anatomist Inderjit Dewan dies

Chandigarh: Noted anatomist and B C Roy awardee Inderjit Dewan passed away here on Sunday. He was 94.

Dewan held the post of Emeritus Professor of Anatomy and Forensic Medicine at the PGIMER here, after retiring from service in 1974, an institute release said.

Dewan was honoured with the prestigious B C Roy National award in 1976 for being an eminent teacher in Anatomy.

He had also set up the Anatomy Department at PGIMER and had served as the president of the Anatomical Society of India from 1962 to 1963, the PGIMER release said.

Two poppy smugglers sentenced

Moga: A local court has sentenced two persons to 10 years rigorous imprisonment for smuggling poppy. Additional Sessions Judge B S Sodhi passed the order against the two acccused Banta Singh and Balbir Singh on Saturday.

Police had caught the two smuggling poppy husk in 2004.

Police bust prostitution racket

Hoshiarpur: Police claim to have busted a prostitution racket and made arrests.. Acting on a tip-off, police sent a decoy customer to the Sant Ravi Dass mohalla where the racket was being run, SSP, Hoshiarpur, R N Dhoke said on Sunday.

Police also raided the kingpin's house and arrested three more girls from there.

A case under various sections of Immoral Traffic Prevention Act, 1956, has been registered in this connection.
