Rs. 1.80 lakh worth of pirated CDs seized

Raids were conducted on 5 video parlours in Tiruvanmiyur, Royapuram

CHENNAI : The Video Piracy wing police arrested seven persons and seized 1,885 compact discs (CD) valued at Rs 1.80 lakh here on Sunday.

Acting on a tip-off, raids were conducted on five video parlours in Tiruvanmiyur and Royapuram by special teams. New Tamil films, including `Paarijatham,'were seized. Few English film CDs were also seized for Copyrights violation. The arrested persons includeVenkatesh (28) of R. A. Puram, Hanifa (44) of Taramani and Baskaran (38) of Mandaveli. After registering cases under the Video Piracy Act, the accused were remanded to custody.

Liquor seized

The Ambattur police seized 360 brandy bottles illegally transported from Karnataka. Police said two persons were questioned as their movements were found to be suspicious. Inquiries and a search revealed that they had Rs. 1 lakh worth brandy and other liquor bottles in their possession. Further investigation is on.

Found dead

A 25-year-old youth identified as Vinod of Kilpauk was found dead under mysterious circumstances near the Railway bridge in Chetput. Police said he left home on Saturday. Two friends informed Vinod's mother Madanakumari about his death this morning. On information, Kilpauk DCP Ganesamoorthy and his team inspected the scene of crime.

The body, which had some cut injuries on the neck, was sent for post mortem to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital. A gold chain and a ring belonging to the deceased were reportedly missing.
