Trieste award for city mathematician

CHENNAI: The Director of Chennai Mathematical Institute, C.S. Seshadri, has been selected for the Trieste Science award for mathematics in recognition of his work in algebraic geometry.

Professor Seshadri, the first Indian mathematician to receive this award, shares the honour with Professor J. Palis of Brazil.

The award consists of a cash prize of $ 50,000 and a citation. The award will be presented at the 10th general conference of the Academy for the Developing World in Brazil in September. Mr. Seshadri is involved in the theory of vector bundles and quotient and compact homogenous spaces. He is considered the creator of the Standard Monomial Theory and Seshadri Constant, which have applications in both mathematics and physics.
