TNGEU plea on regularisation

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Government Employees Union (TNGEU) on Sunday urged the state government to regularise the service of over 12,000 temporary junior assistants and secretariat assistants. They were appointed in 2003 when the government employees and teachers went on a strike. K. Balasubramaniam, TNGEU president, said that these educationally qualified employees, recruited through the Employment Exchange, had served in various departments for the past three years.

He was addressing a meeting of the Tamil Nadu Government Temporary Junior Assistants and Secretariat Assistants Unions here.

Only 25 per cent of these temporary employees had crossed 37 years and age relaxation had to be given for them.

The government would not face any major problem in absorbing them as regular employees as there were one lakh job vacancies, he said, citing a precedent that temporary employees who served the government for one day in 1984 were regularised.

It urged the government to allow 500 temporary staff members deputed to State Marketing Corporation to return to the Secretariat service.
